Matamoras, Penn.

Search for keys snarls bridge traffic
Firefighters from two states spent more than an hour yesterday scouring the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Bridge with rescue equipment – apparently looking for a lost set of keys.
Witnesses said the keys apparently belonged to the Matamoras, Penn. police department.
Matamoras police could not be reached for comment last night.
Firefighters from Matamoras and Port Jervis were involved in the intensive search operation, which snarled traffic in both directions for more than an hour, officials said.

Dozen vehicles involved in chain reaction crashes on Interstate 84

Matamoras, Pa. - A freak white-out triggered a series of crashes this morning on Interstate I-84, on the bridge between Port Jervis and Matamoras, Pa, closing down the eastbound side of the highway for at least an hour.
About 8:30 a.m., a snow squall apparently caused the interstate bridge over the Delaware River to ice up.
Police said one car crashed, which started a chain reaction that led to four additional crashes, according to police.
In total, 12 vehicles, including cars, trucks and tractor-trailers, were involved, police said.
Antonio Terry, 42, of Dingman Ferry, was injured and taken to Bon Secours Hospital. His was the only injury that required hospitalization, police reported.
The accidents are still under investigation, Pennsylvania State troopers said, but several citations were given to drivers for driving too fast under the snowy conditions, police said.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation posted an Internet notice on its regional web site at 9:05 a.m. alerting travelers about the crash and road closure. At 9:50 a.m., PennDOT posted a new notice stating that the left lane was re-opened. The right lane reopened before noon.

20 companies battle lumberyard fire

Milford, Pa. – A potentially disastrous lumberyard fire was brought under control yesterday by a quick and large-scale response by fire crews from three counties across two states.
The fire started around 11:30 a.m. in an outside storage area abutting the lumber warehouse at Luhrs Ace Home Center on Route 209.
One Matamoras firefighter, Sean Alexander, was taken to Bon Secours Hospital in Port Jervis, N.Y., with smoke inhalation.
Fire from burning piles of particle board spread into one end of the blue warehouse, but was stopped there by firefighters from almost 20 companies from Pike County and Orange and Sullivan counties in New York. About 100 firefighters were on the scene.
Jim Beuerman, a firefighter from Slate Hill in Orange County, said there was no visibility inside the warehouse.
"There was a lot of screen doors, some appliances, and a lot of insulation," burning inside, said Beuerman, sitting on a pile of lumber 30 feet from the warehouse with black smudges on his face.
Firefighters cut holes in the metal walls to vent the heat and smoke from the upper floor of the warehouse and kicked or threw most everything out. Charred black rolls of pink insulation piled up under one triangle-shaped hole, a wet pile of blackened window screens sat under another.
Stacks of road-salt bags had melted into black and white knee-high blobs. Smoke and steam poured from a black stack of particle board. A firefighter in a small backhoe knocked it over while others doused it.
"With lumber, you got to pull it all apart to get the fire out," said Westfall fire Chief Mike Pflanz.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Luhrs manager Matt Osterber said there were "a couple" of employees at the lumberyard when the fire started, but they didn't know the cause of the blaze.

Trees, lawn furniture, hot water heaters, and varous other debris continues to flow down the rising Delaware River.

PORT JERVIS, NY - An approximately 11’ inch high wave, spotted in the vicinity of #2 Bridge at about 11:00 a.m. this morning, is moving toward the Mid-Delaware Bridge and a precautionary warning has been issued by officials on both sides of the Delaware for residents to stay away from the river. The wave was created by an earlier release of water from Lake Wallenpaupack and is expected to contribute toward the river’s sustained high levels until tomorrow.

Matamoras Assistant Police Chief Bill Nealis joined Port Jervis and Deerpark officials in cautioning motorists to stay off the road and for citizens to stay away from the river and in their homes unless they are being evacuated.

Port Jervis Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Vicchiariello said the Delaware River, which had reached a height of 20’ 7” as of about 10:30 this morning, is still expected to crest at about 22’ by mid afternoon today and is unlikely to fall below 18’ before tomorrow.

Residents have been asked to evacuate Port Jervis' flooded Acre.

The Town of Deerpark continues to experience severe flooding from the Neversink including reports of a house being washed down the river to the Tri-States Bridge. Debris from upriver has been flowing down both the Neversink and Delaware Rivers, including balls, hot water heaters, whole trees, tubes, lawn furniture, doors, and an assortment of other lost items.
